Abstract

Proactive measures are essential to lower the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and lessen the impacts of climate change. Agroforestry, a method where trees are grown together with crops, is a viable solution for improving carbon capture. This research seeks to measure how much carbon is stored and how much CO₂ is absorbed by different agroforestry systems in Mentengsari Village, located in Cianjur, West Java. It also evaluates the financial benefits based on the amount of carbon absorbed. Data was gathered using a targeted sampling method across plots that were each 20 meters by 20 meters. The biomass from trees, plants growing beneath them, leaf litter, and soil was measured. The amount of carbon stored was calculated using standard formulas for estimating tree size. The value of the carbon absorbed was calculated at $2 for every megagram of carbon. The findings show that the alley cropping system had the greatest ability to store carbon (17.75 tonnes per hectare) and absorb CO₂ (65.08 tonnes per hectare). Overall, the total amount of CO₂ absorbed across the study area was 284.91 tonnes per hectare, which translates to an estimated economic value of 9,248,347 Indonesian rupiah per hectare. In summary, agroforestry, especially alley cropping, greatly improves carbon storage and offers considerable economic advantages. This highlights their role in managing land sustainably and combating climate change.
