Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world's leading exporters of essential oil products, supported by abundant tropical natural forests. However, the weakening of global market demand due to the trade war between the United States and China in 2018 and the COVID-19 pandemic in the period 2020-2022 make Indonesia's essential oil export fluctuated over the period 2018-2024. The objective of this research was then to assess competitive advantages of Indonesia’s essential oil products in the world trade over the period 2018-2024.  Data on export and  import values obtained from Trade Map were used to calculate competitiveness indicator such as  Revealed Comparative Advantage Index, Relative Trade Advantage Index, Trade Specialization Index, Revealed Comparative Advantage Index-1 dan Revealed Competitiveness Index.  The results showed a positive trend of five competitiveness indicators were only found in the HS 330129 and HS 330125 product groups over the period 2018-2024.  These two product groups also had a net competitive advantage.  Their world import values were increased significantly and accounted for about 59% of the world's total essential oils import values in the 2023-2024 period. Hence, Indonesia's essential oil industry needs to specialize in the export of HS 330129 and HS 330125 product groups.  Strategies that are needed to maintain and improve competitiveness as well as market stability of these two product groups are: downstreaming and using of modern production processes; product certification in accordance with international standards; market extension; periodically reviewing trade barriers, tariff changes, and competitor country prices; and maintaning sustainable production.
