Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world’s leading exporters of cinnamon products supported by abundant tropical forest resources. However, global trade disruptions caused by the trade war between the United States and China in 2018 and the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020–2022 resulted in fluctuations in Indonesia’s cinnamon exports over the period 2018–2024. This study aimed to assess the competitive advantages of Indonesia’s cinnamon products in world trade during the period 2018–2024. Export and import data obtained from Trade Map were analyzed using several competitiveness indicators, namely Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Relative Trade Advantage (RTA), Trade Specialization Index (TSI), Revealed Comparative Advantage Index-1 (RCA-1), and Revealed Competitiveness (RC). The results showed that all Indonesian cinnamon product groups had competitive advantages in the world market during 2018–2022, although export performance declined during the same period. In the 2023–2024 period, when Indonesia’s cinnamon exports increased, competitive advantages were maintained by HS 090620 and HS 090619, while the competitiveness of HS 090611 weakened. These findings indicate that Indonesia’s cinnamon products generally remained competitive in international trade despite changes in global market conditions. For the future, Indonesia needs strategies to strengthen competitiveness through product standardization, development of processing technology, market expansion, and continuous monitoring of international trade conditions.
