KARAKTERISTIK OPERASIONAL INDUSTRI PENGOLAHAN KAYU DI KOTA SAMARINDA SEBAGAI STRATEGI PENGEMBANGAN INDUSTRI HASIL HUTAN

Small-scale wood processing industries contribute to forest-product value addition and local economic development, yet their operational characteristics are often described through separate indicators such as location, production activities, or equipment use. Such descriptive approaches provide information on individual characteristics but do not reveal similarities among individual industries based on combinations of operational characteristics. This study addresses this gap by integrating unit-level operational indicators to characterize small-scale wood processing industries and identify groups with similar operational profiles. Primary data were collected through direct observation and structured interviews from 10 active wood processing units in Samarinda City selected using purposive sampling. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize business location, production activities, and equipment and machinery use. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) using Jaccard distance and average linkage was then applied to binary indicators of production activities and equipment use to identify operational groups. The observed industries were distributed across Sungai Pinang (50%), Samarinda Ulu (40%), and Samarinda Utara (10%). Production activities varied among units, with cutting being the most frequently identified activity, while cutting equipment was the most prevalent equipment group. HCA classified the 10 units into two clusters with different combinations of equipment characteristics: one cluster showed a more diverse equipment profile, whereas the other had a relatively more limited profile. Cluster profiles can serve as a foundational reference for forest product industry strategies, encompassing technology facilitation, capacity building, and targeted development for small-scale wood processing industries.
